Every site on this list is an offshore operator: none of them holds a licence from a US state regulator, and none of them is on a state’s own list of approved rooms — that is the trade a player makes for being able to open an account from a state with no legal site of its own. All of them take deposits from US players and all of them run in the browser. We are paid when you open an account through some of these links; it funds the checking and it does not move a brand up the list. 21+.

21+. Play only where your state regulator allows it. We take a commission from some operators; it never moves a room up the list. Gambling problem? Call the National Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738).

The Garden State was instrumental in making it possible for states to legalize sports betting. Its efforts to do so provoked a series of lawsuits that culminated in the Supreme Court striking down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in the spring of 2018. Gov. Phil Murphy signed the relevant NJ sports wagering bill into law on June 11 the same year.

New Jersey had already legalized online casinos and online poker in 2013. It implemented the online portion of its betting on sports in similar fashion, requiring digital operators to partner with land-based betting venues. Eligible partners include both the Atlantic City casinos, which can offer iGaming and sports wagering, and the state’s racetracks, which can only participate in betting on sports.

There are now nearly two dozen online sports wagering options for you to choose from in New Jersey. That’s a daunting amount of choice, but we’re here to help. On this page, you’ll find not only a list of the available options but the information you’ll need to make an educated choice.

#1 – DraftKings Sportsbook NJ

DraftKings has been funneling a ton of money into its efforts to dominate the US sports wagering space, and it shows. Whether this proves to be a good business strategy remains to be seen, but for the time being it works in your favor as a bettor.

DraftKings’ spending is most apparent in two areas: product differentiation and promotional bonuses. On the former front, its software is slick and strikes a good balance between having lots of options and keeping things simple. The Betting Carousel does a good job of predicting what matches you’re likely to be interested in based on past activity, saving you the hassle of digging through menus to find the bets you want. It also has a wide range of betting lines, including single-game parlays, and helpful resources for rookie bettors. There’s even an NFT marketplace, if that’s your thing.

In terms of promotions, DraftKings Sportsbook has the best no deposit bonus offer in the business, with $50 strings-free cash on signup, provided it’s your first time registering for any of DraftKings’ products. You’ll also get a 20% match up to $1000 on your first deposit, access to a rewards program, and occasional limited-time promotions.

#2 – BetMGM Sportsbook NJ

BetMGM Casino is the market leader in US iGaming, and BetMGM Sportsbook is in the top three when it comes to online sports wagering.

As a company, it’s relatively balanced between the verticals, but of course its parent company MGM Resorts International is known for its retail casinos. That makes it a good pick if you like casino games, and especially if you plan on visiting MGM properties, since the M Life Rewards program spans both the retail and online channels and offers numerous perks for dedicated players.

Its software is slick, and though it doesn’t have as many bells as whistles as some sports-focused companies, it does compare nicely in the bonus department. While it lacks a no deposit bonus or a first deposit match, it will give you a risk free first bet, with a maximum of $1000. Whatever bet you place first will get refunded if it loses, up to $1000, though with the catch that you’ll be getting betting credits back, not withdrawable cash. It also offers an ongoing promotion where you’ll get a $10 free bet each week that you place at least $50 in wagers with your own money.

#3 – Caesars Sportsbook NJ

Caesars is another major US retail casino brand, but got off to a slow start when it comes to online gambling and betting on sports.

It became apparent why in late 2020, when it announced its plans to acquire William Hill, a company with tremendous experience in both those areas. After selling off William Hill’s international operations, Caesars merged the two companies’ US player pools and slapped its name on the former William Hill sportsbooks.

In other words, you can now get the Caesars Sportsbook name and the Caesars Rewards loyalty program, but with William Hill’s polished software and user experience. The rewards program applies to all Caesars online products, WSOP Poker, and visits to Caesars retail properties.

Better yet, Caesars has been keeping its foot on the promotional gas pedal since the rebranding. As a result, it has a unique and generous offer for first time bettors: a first bet match up to $1,001. This is like a risk free bet, but better, in that you’ll receive the “refund” even if your bet wins! As with all risk free bets, the matched funds come in the form of bet credit rather than cash. Still, it means you’ll get two bets of up to $1,001 for the price of one. On top of this, Caesars runs weekly sports wagering promotions, though the nature of these can vary.

Physical NJ sportsbooks

Three days after NJ sports betting became law, the state’s first legal sportsbook opened for business — and it wasn’t in one of the Atlantic City casinos. The governor himself placed the inaugural bets at Monmouth Park Racetrack on June 14.

There are now 10 retail sportsbooks in the state:

  • Monmouth Park
  • Borgata
  • Ocean Casino Resort
  • Meadowlands Racetrack
  • Bally’s Wild Wild West
  • Harrah’s Atlantic City
  • Golden Nugget
  • Resorts
  • Tropicana

What can you wager on in NJ sports betting?

Just about anything you can think of. The state’s sportsbooks take action on just about every major sport in the US, and some less major sports from around the world.

But the most common action is on the top-level sports:

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Hockey
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Boxing and mixed martial arts
  • Motorsports
  • Soccer

There are also a variety of ways to bet on all these sports:

  • Point spread: Bet on the outcome of a game based on how much a team will win or lose by.
  • Moneyline: Bet on the winner of a game.
  • Totals: Bet on the amount of points scored in a game.
  • Futures: Bet on future events, like who will win the Super Bowl.
  • Propositions: Betting on whether an outcome will or will not happen in a game, often on a player performance.
  • Parlays: Putting together multiple bets for an increased payout if they are all correct wagers.
  • In-game wagering: Bet on games while they are going on.
